It all began at a French class. While we were working on the reactions of the leaders whose nations have got involved with the Germanwings airplane crash, the problem came that how we should call Spanish leader of government, Mariano Rajoy, in French. My teacher firmly said that Hollande called Rajoy president in a speech, but it was not accepted by all students.
Have reading some materials, I think that it is proper to call him president. In Spanish, Rajoy is presidente del Gobierno which means the leader of the government. And maybe the spelling is borrowed by French without considering the differences between French and Spanish in the word president(e).
Therefore, we should call Rajoy president espagnol. Sometimes le chef du gouvernement espagnol is okay.
